Commodityism: Its Rise and Fall

If we think about this in the universe of commodityism, only a very few make enough money to have any fun and you can define that fun as individual prosperity, or just taking care of what we individually define as the common good. ...So the 800-pound gorilla in the room should not be, can Apple and big oil maintain their value added structures, but rather how do we get some value added back into the rest of our global economic model? ...I was decent at what was at that time the quarter mile, so I ran in that event and also on a leg for the mile relay team, and since we could compete in only three events and I really didn’t have time to train for longer races, I sort of got placed in the second slot in the high hurdles. ...Thankfully my coach scratched me from that district, but when I got to college, on some nights for something to do, I went over to the track to see if my every other lead leg technique would work for me on the intermediate hurdles. ...In later episodes we will break them out into where the hurdles stand today, and finally we will spend a little to some time getting into some details on how we may hurdle these hurdles by focusing on our stride pattern, whether it be a fixed stride or an alternating leg technique. ...Within the concept of “too big to fail,” that risk has been and continues to be passed on to tax payers, by politicians who over time are too risk averse to properly do their jobs, in essence kicking the can down the road, not only in entitlements, finance and human enterprises, but also governmental infrastructure itself, a portion thereof are real roads. ...The only way to go is some sort of means of treating money, in whatever form each sovereign nation would like to do it, realizing that money needs to function as something greater than just another hurdle in our commodityism universe.

In Europe over the weekend, we see the beginning of an attempt to forge a new way of literally doing business, which will eventually have repercussions globally down to the petite cafes of rural France to the American greasy spoon, and everyplace in between. ...How foreign is this concept of leadership and sacrifice, contrasted against our world’s current understanding of those same words; which widely mean, “I will use and abuse you so that I can get what I want—what I deserve.” ...Our unintended consequences of the current concept of federalism, on a global scale, is to substitute stuff—for that humanness and then offer the reductionism of: All you need to do is behave right, try to do your best and ‘we’ will take care of the rest. ...Thankfully because of the wisdom of the CEO of a small stock brokerage house in Vancouver BC, who had the guts to explain the workings of America’s Wall Street, I was wise enough not to believe their hype, hence while I haven’t made a fortune, I have always had a place to sleep and food to eat, without government handouts, and furthermore the Great Recession didn’t depressingly wipe out all my retirement hopes. ...We couldn’t pay entrepreneurs to start a business, because first of all that would be socialism, but more importantly if you attempted to pay people to start businesses, that would require a 3000 page piece of enabling legislation and another 50,000 pages of regulations, which would mean that entrepreneurs couldn’t start a business if they tried. However if we would just come up with a program to not start a business, it could probably be attached as a short rider to the military appropriations bill, or the highway bill, better yet the 2012 Farm Bill. ...As silly as ERPs sound there is really nothing at the Federal or State level in the United States of America, and I assume in most if not all of the global world, that is not an impediment to business startups and entrepreneurs generally.

We have Nixon to thank for not only Watergate, but also wage and price controls and the Arab oil embargo, the closing of the gold window and the creation of true fiat money, the escalation of the Vietnam War and the starting of our all volunteer military, the resignation of vice president Spiro Agnew, Nixon’s visit to China, our current nationalized “fence row to fence row” agricultural policy, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. ...Therefore I will focus on the closing of the gold window, the creation of the all volunteer military that allowed us misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the shoe still to drop, an unsustainable nationalized agricultural soil depletion program that has made us a nation of the grossly obese, fed with junk food, subsidized below the true cost of production. ...As the percentage of American GDP associated with financial transactions continues to rise, at the expense of everything else, we really have limited hope that the political establishment really gets it, and even less optimism that they are truly capable of doing anything about it—without kicking the can off the cliff. ...All national leaders should have that life changing experience, so that they truly understand the reality of war and the unintended consequences they are forcing upon military personnel and families, with multiple deployments to fight in ill conceived operations, to accomplish and unattainable mission within any semblance of a politically and socially accepted time frame. Furthermore this intentional fiat, links Nixon with the Greenspan-Clinton-Bush-Bernanke-Paulson-Obama-Geithner carriage horses, by not understanding most human activities, and especially war, are not subject to rational market forces, especially when we hope they will go away by not broadly and seriously acknowledging their presence. ...On first blush this looks like an American success story, except all these cheap carbohydrates form directly and indirectly the basis for our fast food industry, which has made us the most obese society in history, and has led and is leading to diabetes and other weight related illnesses, which extract more financial burdens on a still out of control healthcare system. ...And remember not only do you have Richard Nixon to thank for that, but also the funny money you used in your purchase, and remember that your were spared the true personal cost of fighting the wars—we should have never started.

Putting this into a little context driven not only by these last few articles here at Wonder Springs but also my outside readings: Has all this “American prosperity” in the last generation been totally driven by slothful debt financing? ...In 2007 when we changed the name to the Wonder Springs Chronicle, not only did we find out that the only real plural Wonder Springs in the world was located in Death Valley, California, but how the concept of “wonder” had almost vanished from our vocabulary. ...Since this week we are asking questions, perhaps Alice and all or many of Carroll’s characters could add some insight to the reason our world has lost all of its sense of wonder? ...Could it be that in order to seek, or experience wonder, you must first want to wander onto that narrow path where it is not just OK to ask questions to which you do not know the answer, but also this is where not knowing is the only right of passage to Wonderland, or at least Death Valley’s Wonder Springs? ...But even in Calvinism’s circular logic you find wonder, light years beyond, “Two years ago I asked Jesus into my heart, and now two years later, I know no more about the wonder of God than I did back then. ...If you only ask shallow questions and make everything fit within the context of Augustine’s City of Man, you become only a religious-theist, and the Rapture, is no longer the wonderful second coming of Jesus Christ, but your ticket to ride away from the responsibility to be salt and light in a dying world. ...What all this means is that when we begin again to hear popular music that reflects a change in society, we will know that the dry bones are in the process of coming to life.

Just as between creation and Noah’s flood, where a long period of time existed between the garden and the flood, likewise there was a time interval between the flood and the Ice Age, another catastrophic event, where extreme climate change caused by spatial cooling again brought about the death of a diverse number of large species, which could not adapt to this harsh climate. ...To the north lies Glacial Lake Spokane, which is generally thought to have an elevation of 2300 feet and at that height it would reach through Spring Creek Canyon, but very little of the land between the low hill separating the Spring Creek Drainage and Audubon Lake shows any flood type erosion; a couple of miles more or less. ...While not even a theory, conjecture would be that the two lakes north of Reardan were in someway connected through a subterranean lava tube at the edge of the plateau basalts, that allowed an early Lake Missoula flood to become a large hydraulic ram, and in the process of the receding waters the tube collapsed upon itself or filled with alluvium from all too then common sources. From what I have checked, the Ice Age Floods, Google Earth overlay looks quite accurate except it backfills the greater Reardan Area with another couple hundred vertical feet of water, which has no evidence on the ground, including my yard, but the overlay does seem to rightly preclude water flowing directly out of Glacial Lake Spokane. ...Up on the Kettle on gently sloping land belonging to the State of Washington, just above the river, on top of some of those clay deposits what could be defined as top soil has a thickness of 2 to 3 inches, then covered with moss, lichens and plant wastes, with no evidence of fire or other ecological disasters. ...Virtually all of Protestantism has no problem considering the Roman Catholic Church as a mausoleum of dead religious bones; yet as we pointed out at the beginning of this article, it is the Roman Catholic Church that is at the forefront of the confrontation with the religious push of this presidential administration on birth control, abortion, and now finance and the role of government through subsidiarity and the social magisterium. Both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, two of the major Republican presidential candidates are vocal, practicing Roman Catholics and even Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, as a Mormon, has no problem confronting religious issues, especially within the paradigm of Mormon eschatology, which will become much more apparent as this ethnotheism election cycle moves toward its climax.

The Ethnotheism title for this week’s message is really just a focus point for much of what I learned on the trip, combined with some distilled essence of Business Ecology, as emphasized in the closing statement from when we last met: ...I realize that some of these initial IPO businesses, might not be counted as large firms, and could be able to obtain the financial funding to go public, but if we just count these as a break even with the large firms with no such public desire, then correcting the link to 2007 data, which includes nonemployer firms of almost 22 million, we see that this amazing piece of bipartisan legislation helps 0.006 percent (to one very significant figure) of American enterprises and does absolutely nothing for 99.994 percent of the job creation backbone of the US economy. ...I do not know if, or how, I will use their stories going forward, but the interesting thing is that they really don’t look at their jobs, as such, in the twentieth century sense, but rather vocational choices to provide for their advocations. ...Within the context of ethnotheism and the beggar understanding of Luther, the evolutionary geological time frame is really an attempt to recreate a visible record of an eternal God, something which can never happen within a church on the other extreme of a continuum, by which creation is defined by a church bishop in Ireland, who determined that God created the universe on Sunday, October 23, 4004 BC. ...The Bible’s literal seven day creation cycle, requires not so much earth days measured as 24 hour days, which literally did not exist before creation day four, but also a uniformity with the present speed of light, which instead of the constant in Einstein’s formula, could very well be a variable, which means both mass and its conversion to energy could be essentially logarithmically infinite. ...Now from the time of the Genesis Flood, as far as we can tell, the elevation of land from the worldwide rainy submersion, to thousands of feet of elevation, with God in control could have been accomplished in literally days, weeks, months, years and even eons by a God not limited to our watchmaker designs—or evolutionary fossil record circular reasoning. ...To make it even more complex the goosenecks are really just a very long series of natural stream meanders, which means that when they were originally created in their current reality, there was very little elevation change.

Briefly this new employment rule states: You are either too young (and incompetent), or too old (and competent), to be seriously considered for a decent job in this nation, because you are surely unwilling to play by the rules of the gross disregard of individual human dignity. ...There is no way this nation is willing to compensate our veterans for the suffering they have endured during multiple politically correct “deployments” fighting the “War on Terror” and if we are not willing to share the horrors of war among the general population and get rid of this “professional” military we truly deserve an apocalyptic fate. ...It doesn’t seem that it should take a rocket scientist or a paleoanthropologist to understand that all the enterprise incentives favor the dinosaurs, behemoths, troglodytes, leviathans and kraken (the 18,000) at the expense of the 8 million, or the 28 million, and that our priorities are severely out of focus. ...Chances of any of the elite of our twentieth century dinosaurs, behemoths, troglodytes, leviathans and kraken of politics, business or the media becoming interested in being apprehended by the reality of nature are somewhat remote, especially since their present ecosystems protect them from the real world that the rest of us face on a daily basis. Sadly the entrepreneurs, small business owners, their employees and people looking for opportunities to fulfill their dreams don’t count, so we don’t have a true count of their numbers, but it isn’t hard to imagine they number in the tens of millions if not a third to half of the United States population. ...If you don’t know the personal Creator responsible for all this awesome grandeur, humanly you need to create spirits and the accompanying religion to cope with the majesty of this miracle we call life. ...The point this brief testimony is trying to make, is that what you need to learn to survive in the true new world order, will not come from the elite, that thinks you can be bought off with a flat screen television, because, even if you have the credit available, you really can’t afford a new car.

Hence our Adam’s ale description has nothing to do with the Samuel Adams brewery that makes a number of tasty brews, but one would think the American patriot himself would understand the Adam’s ale description as relating to the enterprise liquidity of Adam Smith and his descriptions for the Adam’s ale financial requirements for the rise of the Wealth of Nations. We publish this week’s article a few hours early, because tomorrow morning I have to make a trip to Republic, Washington; the county seat of the poorest county in the state, thereby to accomplish what might best be described as: Putting my four plus years of part time residence in its proper context! ...What we need to do is to delete the viruses that have crept into our system: the anticompetitive quasi monopolies that blight everything from banking to public education; the politically correct pseudosciences and soft subjects that deflect good students away from hard science; the lobbyists who subvert the rule of law for the sake of the special interests they represent—to say nothing of our crazily dysfunctional system of health care, our overleveraged personal finances, and our newfound unemployment ethic. ...This week we start to place this into the context that our current problems really stem from this moneyless, but universal debt worldview, in which oikophobia (fear of inheritance and home) is as much a common sense emotional reaction to this early twenty-first century economic chaos, as it has to do with the almost total lack of comprehension on the part of the Oikophobian elitist classes. The unspoken enlightenment gap we face early into this millennia is whether all of our economic activity is truly based upon a natural worldview, or whether we have evolved enough to create a "great something" by harnessing the collective human desire for temporal security. In our developing article for Wednesday we will begin to look at ways to dismantle the land of Oikophobia and use the remnants to create a diverse, energetically sustainable culture—Oikos: A Dwelling Place. In that process we will use as a starting point some of the thoughts of Harvard professor Niall Ferguson from his book Civilization: The West and the Rest. While we recommend the book as a secular understanding of the dominance of Western Civilization on the planet for the last 500 years, Ferguson's talk at last week's Stanford Institute For Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) will provide you a brief context of basically the limitations of what we define as Oikophobia and why gradual decline is not in the cosmos deck of cards, but rather something in human behavioral understanding as defined as a normalcy of deviance event. This transformation will occur along lines briefly outlined under the Business Ecology tab, where in only two of our natural lifestyle curves do not end in crashes; one of those outlines an enteral journey totally designed and implemented by God, the other is an ecological Climax Curve where essentially one decline is replaced by another before, the previous growth cycle descends into either ruins or ashes. The totally human collective eternal "great something" is not part of universe's Grand Design. All the collective-progressive faux-faith is not going to change that true reality.

I realize that I may have a much different view of the commercial than either side of our “in-bed” elites but it seems to me that Clint was chosen for the spot because of his role in the movie Gran Torino, which was also ignored and hoped it would just go away by much of the film industry’s “in-bed” elites. The real interesting statistic that I haven’t heard covered is that the proclaimed “conservatives” (Gingrich and Santorum) out distanced the “moderate” Romney better than two to one, 57 percent to 28 percent and that Romney has yet to get into the higher percentiles, except in New Hampshire, just up the street from his New England base. Furthermore, like all elitists of their persuasion, they believe that new wealth can be created, as do most Republicans, through tax incentives to crony capitalists, which through mergers and acquisitions, will provide the economic basis for the continuing growth of government programs, including entitlement programs and wealth redistribution. ...If you back up and try to put this into context of what is happening in the United States and the world today, what I think he is really saying is something like: Since the end of World War II, the western democracies, using federal government programs financed by deficit spending created the rise of the perceived wealth of their citizens, which increased significantly faster than the true wealth generated through gains in productivity and entrepreneurial new wealth creation. ...However if you look at this in the context of economist Joseph Schumpeter’s “creative destruction” this is just what is needed to recreate an economic world truly based upon the title of this week’s article: productivity, efficiency and decentralization. ...However in the current economic environment there seems to be more time for the less physical, which is enforced because of the limitations of our current economic reality; for there is no money in our liquidity river, just some distant debt lakes, that seem to be represented by bills to pay; arriving every month describing our contribution there to. Some phosphorus in our river comes from human activity, a lot of it comes from natural sources, but just because we cannot control the amount of nitrogen, in our human enlightenment we make the decision that we want to control the phosphorus and keep the rivers and the lakes from turning green and potentially stinking from too much primary productivity.

In last week’s article we played around with the normal gross domestic product (GDP) formula creating a modified alternative domestic product (MADP) that included provisions for the creation of new wealth, productivity, inflation and a risk premium. After American equity markets closed on Friday, the Standard & Poors rating agency officially downgraded the debt ratings of a number of European countries, but earlier in the day these downgrades rumors were the talk of the business news. The following clip from CNBC is with Edmund Phelps, 2006 Nobel laureate in economics, which discusses the European ratings, especially the so-called “Club Med” southern European countries in the context of declining economic productivity and increasing passive wealth through government entitlements and low taxes. Professor Phelps is the Director of The Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University. When you look around the world, even though there seems currently a little temporary stability coming to the United States, we still seem incapable of even dealing with our universe of ever expanding debt; solutions are just as far away as they were a year ago; yet the current plight remains a juggernaut to a stable future. ...None of these calculations really relate to a real enterprise world where monetary policy, inflation, true wealth creation or any number of other factors operate essentially not so much by an invisible hand, but rather the unintended consequences of the world’s financial markets. ...What we need to do is to modify this formula so in some more credible way it takes into account the real world, its risks and rewards; for it is only in this way that we can in some way move from all financial transactions taking just and itsy-bitsy no risk cut of the action, into a world where we acknowledge true risk, rewards and new (real) wealth creation. ...Breaking them out separately, it is not hard to infer that the American jobs and prosperity problem is that the financing required to provide economic growth is hidden in twentieth century debt leverage and risk denial, where risk denial is not a river in Egypt, but oceanic lakes of excessive-debt-leveraged-fiat-money parked in financial centers around the world. ...In other words, and in another world other than the present, money should function as a medium of exchange and as such we can impute a temporal value, but that can and should be controlled not only by the amount but also by the velocity by which it changes hands. The nature of the entrepreneur is that any money to fund the startup of the company must be real capital and not debt, especially because in the early stages of the entrepreneurial enterprise, that capital has a very limited velocity, if it has any velocity at all. ...If 70 percent of America’s domestic product came from entrepreneurs there would be no unemployment, there would be no inflation because of limited monetary velocity, government would provide government services instead of enterprise fringe benefits, and imports and exports would be balanced because entrepreneurial growth will be exported to the rest of the world.

Diane’s work was again brought to my attention by an article by Gillian Tett in the Financial Times that appeared late last year and widely reported in many sources about the potential for another Flash crash threatens to return with a vengeance. ...By definition, we have come to believe that the future will always be better than the past, but that assumes totally that all that we have taken for granted all of these years, will really continue to function in a sustainable way. ...There is no shortage of future seers at this time of year, I even read one that ignored all that future stuff and just gave his end of 2012 report, effective December 20, 2012, just before the Mayan end of the world. ...I suppose the ultimate form of the normalcy of deviance is that predicting the future is a little like forecasting the weather, when you get out beyond a few days, the accuracy gets a little muddled, especially if you attempt to force that future into your model of climate change, or the lack thereof. ...In our current economic world, there is really no tie to the natural world at all, at best you can make the argument that global commerce is based upon capitalism, but if you wander back much beyond Adam Smith’s, Wealth of Nations, and the simultaneous rise of representative governments, you are generally adventuring onto an economic flat earth of sovereigns and tyrants. ...The Age of Discovery worked so well because we were able to exploit, for less than true domestic market values, various areas of the world for their wealth, mostly natural resources, but to a limited and complementary extent, the area’s human assets. ...This is especially true if you followed that late twentieth century debt education model and have recently found out that your song has no market value in the world of global-crony capitalism.

I don’t think I have ever quoted Pat Buchanan in all my years of doing these writings, but this week his pusillanimous comments about American Christians pretty much illustrates the timidity that is behind the current dominance of the Profane Covenant in not only this country, but also the whole of western culture. ...Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. ...When God selected the nation of Israel to be the chosen people to bring about the natural environment for the coming messiah, God gave Moses these written laws, so that the people would be without excuse, when, not if, they decided to adopt their own profane religion. ...Let’s choose just ten items out of this profane universe in no particular order: evolution, the Euro, tax cuts are cause and effect for economic growth, tax hikes are cause and effect of economic growth, human actions will counter climate change, the elites should manage the proletariat, there are no limits to (economic) growth, money is our god, religion is just a primitive myth, mankind can create heaven on earth. ...The noise truly doesn’t want us to look at the mess the Profane Covenant has created, because if we drop out we will have to look at the reality of God as God. ...As of this writing, I personally don’t think any of those who are seeking this office, comprehend the true reality they think they can manage, because the God of both the biblical Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants will not be hampered to do his will by the shallow precepts of our political systems. I also realize that many historic White House Hanukkah celebrations would not be considered kosher in the Jewish sense, but for some reason I find this date and the whole lack of any sort of sanctification or glory given to God, to fit the party occasion properly. ...We do know that December twenty-fifth was chosen, not because it was near the winter solstice and the church scholars were too stupid to get the date right, but rather so that Jesus could be circumcised in the temple on our western’s secular culture’s New Years Day. ...The so-called war on Christmas has slowly been subject to much entropy in recent years, but the Happy Holiday’s just won’t go away, because when you get right down to it, our secular world is just as anti-Semitic as it is anti-Christian, it just depends which way the wind is blowing that particular moment. ...The churches’ graceless vain attempts at relevance allows for the reality of all the economic hype that this season produces: Black Friday, the day after the American Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday and there are also Super Sale Days until after the New Year, of course focusing on the weekend, when people have time to shop, instead of work in that boring, low paying service job, unless of course you work in retail. ...We began this week’s merry discourse with the reality that two sons of Aaron, the High Priest, brother of Moses, decided to take the religion of the Exodus into their own enlightened hands and found out they were not all that enlightened in their religion. ...This really doesn’t gain any cognizance at all in an advanced human religion where people evolved from some form of advanced primate eons ago, but in a young earth religious setting, as outlined in the Bible, it does make a lot of sense. ...That miracle of Jesus, (Jeshua, Joshua, God Rescues) was that God became man, lived a sinless live, was crucified on a cross for our justification, and was raised from death as the timeless hope that all of human law had become subject to the unmerited specific grace of God.

The move itself, with the truck leaving north Spokane after 9 AM Wednesday and completed in less than 12 hours, was a reality trip proving you can’t do that is many times wrong. ...Then the youngster on the team, in his late 50s, was my neighbor Rick Sphuler, who once I moved to the big BC (Boulder Creek) determined we were in the University of Washington Medical Center Hospital at the same time; me for a heart valve and an artificial section of aorta, Rick for a bone marrow transplant. ...Uncle Sam maybe getting old, but he is far from dead, and as a virtual reality figure, is not subject to the natural decay of we mere mortals, who like to export our limitations on everything we cannot control within our limited spheres of personal understanding. While we got the move accomplished in less that 12 hours, the new behemoth on the local communications front, Century Link, was supposed to have me set up with my new high-speed DSL internet link last Tuesday and hemmed and hawed until yesterday; they now say that it will happen this coming Wednesday. ...As a graduate school alumnus of Washington State University, about the only news I have kept up on in the last week is Wazzu has hired a new football coach, one-time national coach of the year Mike Leach, formerly of Texas Tech. I bring this up because the WSU athletic director Bill Moos, is from Edwall and played his high school football on a field a few blocks to the south of my new home, at Reardan High School. ...Now that I am situated in the Eastern Washington wheat belt, one of the conversations I had the other day brought up the potential reality that under the current practices and incentives in American agriculture, it maybe impossible to provide our citizens a truly healthful diet.
